Kanku Dai - Step by Step

# Explanation
1. Begin the Kata in FUDO DACHI. Move into MUSUBI DACHI and MOKUSO on the command MOKUSO. On the next command KANKU DAI, open eyes, move into the HACHIJI DACHI (YOI DACHI) position with IBUKI.

On the command HAJIME/ICHI slowly place both hands into the KANKU position (hands open, index finger and thumb of each hand touching), in front of the groin. Slowly raise both arms into the KANKU position above the head. Maintain this position for approximately 3 seconds and part them strongly bringing both arms down in a circular action in front of the body to strike right SHUTO HIZO UCHI to the palm of the left hand.


2. Turn 90° anti-clockwise to the left into left Kokutsu Dachi and block Shuto Mawashi Uke.
3. Move the left leg and turn 180° clockwise into right Kokutsu Dachi and block Shuto Mawashi Uke.
4. Pivot 90° anti-clockwise on both feet into left Sanchin Dachi and block left Chudan Uchi Uke and immediately punch Chudan Gyaku Tsuki.
5. Again, while still in left Sanchin Dachi, block right Gyaku Chudan Uchi Uke and punch Chudan Oi Tsuki.
6. Move forward with the left foot into left Kokutsu Dachi and block Shuto Mawashi Uke (1).
7. Move forward into right Kokutsu Dachi and block Shuto Mawashi Uke (2).
8. Move forward into left Kokutsu Dachi and block Shuto Mawashi Uke (3).
9. Move forward into right Zenkutsu Dachi and strike right Yonhon Nukite (the left hand remains open under the right elbow) and make KIAI.
10. Move left foot across to the right (look to the left), simultaneously raise the left hand behind into a Jodan ShutoJODAN SHUTO cover with the arm straight and at the same time the right hand is placed behind the head in preparation for the shuto strike. Complete the turn of 180° anti-clockwise by pivoting the hips into left Zenkutsu Dachi and strike with a right Shuto Ganmen Uchi, simultaneously the left hand is pulled back in front of the forehead with the palm facing outwards to cover.
11. Leaving the hands in this position kick right Chudan Mae Geri and step forward into right Zenkutsu Dachi and punch Seiken Nihon Tsuki (left-right).
12. Move right foot across to the left (look to the right), simultaneously raise the right hand behind into a Jodan Shuto cover with the arm straight and at the same time the left hand is placed behind the head in preparation for the shutostrike. Complete the turn of 180° clockwise by pivoting the hips into right Zenkutsu Dachi and strike with a left Shuto Ganmen Uchi, simultaneously the right hand is pulled back in front of the forehead with the palm facing outwards to cover.
13. Leaving the hands in this position kick left Chudan Mae Geri and step forward into left Zenkutsu Dachi and punch Seiken Nihon Tsuki (right-left).
14. Bring back the left foot and turn 90° clockwise into Musubi Dachi and go into a left Waki Kamae (to the left ready punch position with the right fist in the Tettsui position on top of the left fist).
15. With both hands in the same position kick right Jodan Mae Geri, bring back the leg into Musubi Dachi and look to the right. Kick right Jodan Yoko Geri to the side and simultaneously strike right uraken uchi. Open the fist of the extended right arm and land in right Zenkutsu Dachi (90° clockwise from original position) and strike left Jodan Hiji Ate into the open right hand.
16. Bring back the left leg back and turn 90° anti-clockwise into Musubi Dachi and go into a right Waki Kamae (to the right ready punch position with the left fist in the Tettsui position on top of the right fist).
17. With both hands in the same position kick left Jodan Mae Geri, bring the leg back into Musubi Dachi and look to the left. Kick left Yoko MAE Geri to the side and simultaneously strike left jodan uraken uchi. Open the fist of the extended left arm and land in left Zenkutsu Dachi (90° anti-clockwise from original position) and strike right Jodan Hiji Ate into the open left hand.
18. Move the right foot forward at 45° clockwise into left Sanchin Dachi and block right Jodan Uke.
19. Strike with right Uraken Ganmen Uchi, right Jodan Hiji Ate, cover with the left arm and drop the body as low as possible into a crouching narrow Kiba Dachi when you strike right Oroshi Hiji Ate and make KIAI.
20. As you regain the standing position move the left leg 90° clockwise into left Sanchin Dachi at 45° and block left Jodan Uke.
21. Strike with left Uraken Ganmen Uchi, left Jodan Hiji Ate, cover with the right arm and drop the body as low as possible into a crouching narrow Kiba Dachi when you strike left Oroshi Hiji Ate and make KIAI.
22. As you regain the standing position move 45° anti-clockwise to the left, open both hands and simultaneously move forward into right Moro Ashi Dachi (raise knee without letting it drop back) and simultaneously block SHUTO MOROTE GEDAN BARAI (1).
23. Raise both hands to cover the face and simultaneously move forward into right Moro Ashi Dachi and simultaneously block SHUTO MOROTE GEDAN BARAI (2).
24. Pull back both SHUTO hands into a left Kamae (right above left), simultaneously move forward into right Moro Ashi Dachi, punch right Chudan Oi Tsuki with the left open hand placed on the right forearm.
25. Pivot on the right foot and turn anti-clockwise 180°, raise both open hands to cover the face and simultaneously move forward into left Moro Ashi Dachi and simultaneously block SHUTO MOROTE GEDAN BARAI (1).
26. Raise both open hands to cover the face and simultaneously move forward into left Moro Ashi Dachi and simultaneously block Shuto Morote Gedan Barai (2).
27. Raise both hands to cover the face and simultaneously move forward into left Moro Ashi Dachi and simultaneously block Shuto Morote Gedan Barai (3).
28. Pull back both SHUTO hands into a right KAMAE (left above right*), simultaneously* move forward into left Moro Ashi Dachi with the right open hand placed on the left forearm.
29. Pull the right hand back closed to the ready punch position and move forward with the right leg (turning 90° anti-clockwise) into Kiba Dachi and punch right Chudan jun Tsuki with KIAI.
30. Bring back the right foot and turn 90° clockwise into MUSUBI DACHI and go into a left Waki Kamae (to the left ready punch position with the right fist in the TETTSUI position on top of the left fist).
31. With both hands in the same position kick right Jodan Mae Geri, bring the leg back into Musubi Dachi and look to the right. Kick rightJodan Yoko Geri to the side and simultaneously strike right uraken uchi. Open the fist of the extended right arm and land in right Zenkutsu Dachi (90° clockwise from original position) and strike left Jodan Hiji ATE into the open right hand.
32. Bring back the left foot and turn 90° anti-clockwise into Musubi Dachi and go in a right Waki Kamae (to the right ready punch position with the left fist in the Tettsui position on top of the right fist).
33. With both hands in the same position kick left Jodan Mae Geri, bring the leg back into Musubi Dachi, and look to the left. Kick left Jodan Yoko Geri to the side and simultaneously strike left uraken jodan uchi. Open the fist of the extended left arm and land in left Zenkutsu Dachi (90° anti-clockwise from original position) and strike right Jodan Hiji Ate into the open left hand.
34. Turn your head 90° clockwise to the right and move the right foot forward into a semi right Neko ashi Dachi, simultaneously go into a left Waki Kamae (right on left). Move sideward to the right into right Kake Dachi and punch Morote Tsuki (same level) with KIAI.
35. From this position move the left foot to the left into Kiba Dachi and quickly cover with a right fist to the left (position left arm under right arm, ready for a strike with the palm parallel to the ground), look to the left and slowly execute a left haishu uchi (at shoulder height) and move the right fist to the ready punch position.
36. Leaving the left hand in this position, kick right Teisoku Soto Mawashi Keage turning the body 180° anti-clockwise, and before you position the right foot make a right Jodan Hiji Ate, left Waki Kamae and jump sideward into right Kake Dachi and punch Morote Tsuki (same level).
37. Jump up and slightly back landing in a low right Zenkutsu Dachi with the finger tips of both hands touch the ground in front of the right foot when the jump is completed.
38. Look to the rear and block Shuto Ushiro Morote Gedan Barai parallel to the back leg.
39. Look to the front, stand up and pull the right foot back into right Kokutsu Dachi and block right Shuto Mawashi Uke.
40. Pivot 90° anti-clockwise into left Sanchin Dachi blocking left Chudan Uchi Uke and right Mae Gedan Barai.
41. Repeat the block: right Chudan Uchi Uke and left Mae Gedan Barai.
42. Bring the right hand slowly down in a semi circular movement to form a lower Kanku position. Slowly raise both arms into the Kanku position above the head. Maintain this Kanku position for approximately 3 seconds and part the hands strongly bringing both arms down in a circular action in front of the body to strike right Shuto Hizo Uchi into the palm of the left hand.
43. Pivot clockwise 180° on the left foot into a semi right Zenkutsu Dachi (ENOJI DACHI - left heel is raised off the ground) so that hips and head are turned to the right; cover the attack with left Shotei in front of the body with the right hand open in the ready punch position. Pivot the hips 90° anti-clockwise into Kiba Dachi and strike right Chudan Yonhon Nukite .
44. Pivot the hips 90° anti-clockwise into a left semi Zenkutsu Dachi and cover with right Shotei. Strike left Chudan Yonhon Nukite turning the hips back to the original Kiba Dachi position.
45. In the same position turn your head 90° clockwise, look forward and block left Shotei Chudan Kake Uke (OSHI UKE) with IBUKI, keep your breath, and strike right CHUDAN YONHON NUKITE and left CHUDAN YONHON NUKITE and on the last strike finish the IBUKI.
46. Pivot anti-clockwise 180° on the right foot into a semi left Zenkutsu Dachi (ENOJI DACHI - right heel is raised off the ground) so that hips and head are turned to the left; cover with right SHOTEI in front of the body with the right hand open in the ready punch position. Pivot the hips 90° clockwise into Kiba Dachi and strike right CHUDAN YONHON NUKITE.
47. Pivot the hips 90° clockwise into a right semi Zenkutsu Dachi and cover with left Shotei. Strike right Chudan Yonhon Nukite turning the hips back to the original Kiba Dachi position.
48. In the same position turn your head 90° anti-clockwise, look forward and block right SHOTEI CHUDAN KAKE UKE (OSHI UKE) with IBUKI, keep your breath, and strike left CHUDAN YONHON NUKITE and right CHUDAN YONHON NUKITE and on the last strike finish the IBUKI.
49. Pivot anti-clockwise 180° on the left foot into a semi right Zenkutsu Dachi (left heel is raised off the ground) so that hips and head are turned to the right; cover with left Shotei in front of the body with the right hand open in the ready punch position. Pivot the hips 90° clockwise into Kiba Dachi and strike right Chudan Yonhon Nukite.
50. Pivot the hips 90° anti-clockwise into left semi Zenkutsu Dachi and cover with right Shotei. Strike left CHUDAN YONHON NUKITE turning the hips back to the original KIBA DACHI position.
51. Look to the front and block left SHOTEI CHUDAN KAKE UKE (OSHI UKE) with IBUKI, keep your breath, and strike right Chudan Yonhon Nukite and left Chudan Yonhon Nukite and on the last strike finish the IBUKI.
52. Make a cross step with the right foot and move into a left semi Zenkutsu Dachi and right Shotei. Strike left CHUDAN YONHON NUKITE turning the hips back to the original KIBA DACHI position.
53. Pivot the hips 90° clockwise into right semi Zenkutsu Dachi and cover with left Shotei. Strike right CHUDAN YONHON NUKITE turning the hips back to the original KIBA DACHI position.
54. Look to the front and block right Shotei Chudan Kake Uke (OSHI UKE) with IBUKI, keep your breath, and strike left Chudan Yonhon Nukite and right Chudan Yonhon Nukite and on the last strike finish the IBUKI.
55. Still in the same position with both hands open reach up to the right, grab the opponent, and moving into a deep left Zenkutsu Dachi, simultaneously execute a Tai Otoshi (throw) (the fists dosing during the execution of the throw).
56. Leaving the right hand in the original position raise the left fist in preparation for a block and execute left Mae Gedan Barai and punch right Gedan Gyaku Tsuki with KIAI (when executing the Gyaku Tsuki the body should be positioned so that the punching fist is slightly below the bent knee).
57. Retaining the same position reach up to the left with the hands open, grab the opponent and execute the Tai Otoshi as you turn 180° clockwise to the right into a stance similar to right Zenkutsu Dachi.
58. Block right Mae Gedan Barai and punch left Gedan Gyaku Tsuki and KIAI (when executing the Gyaku Tsuki the body should be positioned so that the punching fist is slightly below the bent knee).
59. The Kata is completed by moving the right foot back into Musubi Dachi and the Mokuso position is retained when the command NAORE is given.
60. After the command Yasmee the Fudo Dachi position is taken.
